Multi-Agency Library Benefits from Daylighting Strategies

In libraries, lighting typically consumes more energy than any other end use. Consequently, the design team for the Multi-Agency Library at the College of the Desert decided to take advantage of the abundant natural light available in this desert climate to reduce energy use. This strategy directly resulted in strong architectural elements that delineate the building, making it a readily identifiable icon for the college campus and the surrounding community.

To minimize the penetration of desert heat and direct-beam light, the design includes carefully shaded vertical glazing in high clerestories over the vaulted circulation spaces and offices. Roof monitors over the reading carrels ensure ample light without solar heat penetration. When supplementary natural light is available, continuous dimming controls modulate the fluorescent lights in the offices and reading and stack areas. This modulation is so gradual as to be imperceptible to the occupants.
